Waterway & Beach Cleanups in Calcasieu Parish

Calcasieu Parish is home to a wide network of rivers, lakes, bayous, and Gulf Coast shoreline—and keeping them free of litter protects wildlife, water quality, and the outdoor spaces our community depends on. Litter that starts on land doesn't stay there. Wind and rain carry it into ditches and storm drains, and from there it flows into our waterways and, eventually, the Gulf.

Remove litter from local waterways in Calcasieu Parish.

Local Waterways We Help Protect

Calcasieu Parish's waterways aren't just recreational—they're central to how the parish lives, works, and plays:

  • The Calcasieu River, running through the heart of the parish and Lake Charles
  • Lake Charles and Prien Lake, popular for boating, fishing, and shoreline recreation
  • Contraband Bayou, winding through the city and connecting to the broader waterway system
  • The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, a major commercial and recreational corridor
  • Gulf Coast shoreline, supporting fishing, tourism, and coastal wildlife
  • Other local waterways in the area

Why Waterway Cleanups Matter

Litter in our rivers, lakes, and along shorelines doesn't just look bad—it harms fish and wildlife, clogs drainage systems, and affects the recreational and commercial value of the water Calcasieu Parish depends on for fishing, boating, and tourism. A single cleanup event can remove thousands of pieces of litter before they cause lasting damage downstream.

How to Get Involved

  • Adopt a waterway spot — Choose a shoreline, boat launch, or bank along one of our local waterways through the Adopt-A-Spot program. Pick It Up Calcasieu provides bags, gloves, and safety vests at no cost.

  • Organize a group cleanup — Gather friends, coworkers, or a community organization and schedule your own waterway cleanup.

  • Join a scheduled event — Keep an eye on this page and Pick It Up Calcasieu's events calendar for organized waterway and shoreline cleanups throughout the year.

  • Report dumping near waterways — If you spot illegal dumping along a river, lake, or shoreline, report it here.

Tips for a Safe, Effective Waterway Cleanup

  • Wear closed-toe shoes and gloves, and bring water and sun protection
  • Stick to accessible shoreline areas—avoid unstable banks, deep mud, or fast-moving water
  • Use a trash picker or tongs for sharp or unpleasant items instead of bare hands
  • Sort recyclables from trash where possible
  • Never attempt to remove large or hazardous debris yourself—report it instead
